Downspout drainage problems on Plainfield lots

Most homeowners want downspouts underground. The tricky part is picking an outlet that actually drains on your lot.

No slope to daylight

On flatter lots there’s nowhere downhill to send the line, so it needs a different kind of outlet.

Extensions that get mowed or tripped over

Above-ground downspout extensions get kicked aside, and the water ends up back by the house.

Corrugated pipe that collapses or clogs

Flexible pipe sags, crushes and traps debris in its ridges until it stops draining.

Pop-up emitters in the wrong spot

An emitter placed too close to the house, or uphill, just moves the puddle a few feet.

The Celtic Way in Plainfield: follow the water

We pick the outlet first, then design the line back to the downspout, not the other way around.

  1. Read the lot. We look at slope, where water already flows and where a line could discharge.
  2. Choose the outlet. Daylight on a slope, a pop-up emitter, or an exterior sump or dry well basin.
  3. Lay smooth-wall PVC. Rigid pipe with steady fall that doesn’t sag or trap debris.
  4. Connect every downspout. Each one tied in, with clean-out access where it helps.

Why rigid PVC. Smooth-wall PVC keeps its slope and doesn’t trap debris the way ridged flexible pipe does. It’s more work to lay, but it keeps draining.

Clay changes the outlet choice. Central Indiana clay is slow to absorb water, so an outlet that depends on soaking into the ground needs to be sized and placed with that in mind. We’ll explain the trade-offs between emitters and basins on your lot.

Plainfield downspout drainage questions

What’s the difference between a pop-up emitter and a dry well?

A pop-up emitter releases water onto the lawn at the end of the line. A dry well or exterior basin collects water below ground and lets it drain out more gradually. Which works better depends on your lot.

Can you use my existing flexible pipe?

Usually we replace it. Corrugated pipe sags and traps debris, and once it stops draining it holds water near the house. We’ll check it first.

How far from the house should the water go?

Far enough that it doesn’t drain back toward the foundation. The right distance depends on slope and where the outlet can sit, and we plan it on the visit.
