Where water problems around Indianapolis homes start

A wet basement or a soggy yard is the end of a path. The water came from somewhere, and it stopped somewhere it shouldn’t. Central Indiana’s clay soil drains slowly, so water that lands near the house tends to stay there.

Downspouts emptying at the foundation

Every downspout carries the water from a whole section of roof. If it lets go a foot from the wall, that water soaks straight down beside the basement.

Clay soil that holds water

Clay takes water in slowly and gives it up slowly. Low spots stay muddy for days, and saturated soil presses water against foundation walls.

A yard that slopes the wrong way

When the ground falls toward the house, or flattens out next to it, surface water collects where you least want it.

Water already getting inside

Damp where the wall meets the floor, or puddles after heavy rain, means water has found its way through. That needs a different answer than the yard does.

The Celtic Way: follow the water

Clearing a clog or adding a splash block treats one symptom. We trace the water from the roof to the ground to the basement, find where the path breaks, and fix it there.

  1. Start at the roof. We look at how many downspouts you have, where each one lets go, and how much roof feeds it.
  2. Read the ground. We check slope, low spots, wet areas and where the lot can actually shed water by gravity.
  3. Find where it goes wrong. Outside the wall, under the yard, or inside the basement. Where the water breaks through decides the fix.
  4. Send it somewhere safe. We route the water away from the house and end it at a place that can take it, so it doesn’t come back.

Buried downspout drainage with PVC pipe being installed

Downspout drainage

Buried PVC drainlines carry roof water away from the foundation to daylight, a pop-up emitter or a basin. See downspout drainage.

French drains

A gravel-wrapped perforated pipe collects groundwater from a soggy yard or along the foundation and moves it off. See French drains.

Interior French drains

When water is already coming in where the wall meets the floor, an interior drain catches it and leads it to a sump. See interior French drains.

Sump pump discharge tied into buried downspout drains

Sump pumps

New pumps and replacements, with a discharge line that carries water away instead of back to the wall. See sump pumps.

Most jobs start with the downspouts. The roof collects more water than any other part of the property, and the gutters deliver it to a few points along the wall. If those points are wrong, nothing else in the yard will fully fix it. That’s why we look at the gutters and downspouts before we talk about trenches.

Some homes need more than one piece. A drainline might handle the roof water while a French drain deals with groundwater in a low corner, and a sump pump handles what reaches the basement. We’ll explain which parts your house needs, which it doesn’t, and why.

Drainage questions from Indianapolis homeowners

How do I know which drainage fix I need?

It depends on where the water starts and where it gets in. Roof water at the foundation usually points to downspout drainlines, a wet yard to a French drain, and water inside the basement to an interior drain and sump pump. We work that out on a free visit.

Why does my yard stay wet so long after rain?

Much of central Indiana sits on clay soil, which drains slowly. Add a low spot or a downspout emptying nearby and the ground stays saturated for days. Moving water away and giving groundwater a path out usually solves it.

Can you fix drainage without tearing up the whole yard?

Most drainage work involves a trench, so some digging is unavoidable. We plan the route to keep it as short and direct as the lot allows, and your quote shows where the lines will run.

Do you handle gutters as well as drainage?

Yes. Because downspouts feed most drainage systems, we install and repair gutters too, and we check the fascia on every job.

Is the visit and quote free?

Yes. We come out, look at the property, and give you a written quote at no charge.
