Why downspouts cause foundation and basement water

A downspout gathers the rain from a large piece of roof and drops it in one spot. Where that spot is decides whether the water helps or hurts.

Splash blocks that move water a foot

A splash block or short extension lets the water go right beside the wall. On clay soil it soaks in there and stays.

Extensions that get kicked or mowed

Above-ground extensions get moved, crushed or pulled off. The day they’re out of place is often the day it rains hard.

Erosion and washouts by the wall

A strong downspout digs a hole where it lands, which then holds water against the foundation.

Old buried lines that clogged or collapsed

Corrugated pipe that sags or fills with silt backs up, so the water spills at the downspout as if nothing was there.

The Celtic Way: follow the water

We don’t just bury a pipe. We work out where each downspout’s water can go, then pick the outlet that suits your lot.

  1. Map every downspout. We note each one, how much roof feeds it, and where water already pools or erodes.
  2. Find the low ground. We check whether the yard falls enough to drain by gravity to daylight, and where that outlet could be.
  3. Lay smooth PVC with steady fall. Rigid PVC keeps its slope and is easier to keep clear than flexible corrugated pipe.
  4. Finish at the right outlet. Daylight, a pop-up emitter, or a basin for flat lots, placed away from the house and the neighbors.

Downspout drainlines and outlets we install

Buried PVC drainlines

Each downspout connects to a buried PVC line that runs the water underground and out of the way.

Gravity discharge to daylight

Where the lot falls away, the line exits at a lower point and simply drains out. Nothing to power or maintain.

Pop-up emitters

A cap at the end of the line pops open when water flows and closes when it stops, so the outlet sits flush in the lawn.

Exterior sump or dry-well basin

On flat lots with nowhere lower to drain, the line feeds a basin that holds the water and releases it away from the house.

Flat lots need a different plan. Gravity only works if there’s somewhere lower to send the water. When there isn’t, an exterior sump or dry-well basin collects the flow and lets it out at a safe distance. We’ll tell you which one fits after we’ve looked at the ground.

A sump pump can share the line. If your basement sump pump currently discharges next to the house, we can tie it into the buried drainline so that water leaves too. Sump pump installation.

Check the gutters too. A drainline can only carry what the gutter delivers. If your gutters overflow or leak, we’ll point it out. Gutter repair.

Downspout drainage questions

Why PVC instead of corrugated pipe?

Smooth PVC holds its slope, doesn’t crush as easily, and gives silt fewer places to settle. Corrugated pipe can sag over time, and water sits in the low spots.

What if my yard is flat?

Then gravity to daylight may not work. We use an exterior sump or dry-well basin instead, which takes the water from the line and releases it away from the house.

Where does the water come out?

At a daylight outlet on lower ground, a pop-up emitter in the lawn, or a basin. We choose the spot on the visit so it isn’t aimed at the house or a neighbor.

Can you replace my old buried downspout lines?

Yes. If an old line is clogged, cracked or collapsed, we can dig it out and replace it with PVC, or re-route it if the original path was the problem.
