How sliding snow and ice damage gutters

Indiana winters swing between snow, thaw and refreeze. When a layer of snow on the roof lets go all at once, the gutter is the first thing in its path.

Gutters bent or torn off

A sheet of snow and ice sliding off the roof can catch the front lip of a gutter and pull it down with it.

Hangers and fascia strained

Even when the gutter stays up, the shock can loosen hangers and crack or split weak fascia boards.

Snow dumping on walkways

Snow sliding off over a door, path or driveway lands where people walk, and on anything parked below.

Damaged gutter guards

Guards sit right at the roof edge, where sliding snow hits hardest. They can be pushed out of place or bent.

The Celtic Way: follow the snow, then follow the water

Snow bars aren’t needed on every roof. We look at how your roof sheds snow and where it lands before recommending them.

  1. Look at the roof and the slide path. We note the roof pitch, material and the spots where snow tends to slide, such as over entries and above long gutter runs.
  2. Check the gutters below. We look for bent sections, loose hangers or soft fascia that suggest past snow damage.
  3. Plan the layout. Bars or guards are placed above the gutter line where they’ll do the most good for your roof.
  4. Fasten them to hold. Each one is secured to the roof so it can take the load of snow and ice through the winter.

Does your roof need them? Snow bars matter most on roofs that shed snow quickly, especially steeper pitches and smoother roof surfaces, and anywhere snow slides over an entry, walkway or a long run of gutter. Some roofs hold snow well on their own and don’t need them. Whether they suit your roof depends on its material and pitch, so we look at the roof in person and give you a straight answer instead of a blanket recommendation.

What they don’t do. Snow bars slow and hold snow. They don’t melt it, and they don’t stop ice from forming in the gutter. If you’re seeing ice build up along the roof edge or gutters pulling loose, the gutter itself may need attention too. See gutter repair and fascia repair.

Snow bar questions

What do snow bars do?

They hold snow and ice on the roof so it melts off gradually instead of sliding off in one heavy sheet. That protects the gutters below and anyone walking underneath. They don’t melt snow or prevent ice.

Do I need snow bars on my Indianapolis home?

Not every roof does. They’re most useful where snow slides off quickly, over doors and walkways, or above long gutter runs that have been bent before. We look at your roof and tell you honestly whether they’re worth it.

Will snow bars work on my roof?

It depends on the roof material and pitch. We check your roof on the visit and only recommend snow bars where they suit it. The quote is free.

Is it a snow bar or a snow guard?

People use the terms loosely. Snow bars are usually continuous rails, while snow guards are individual pieces spaced across the roof. Both aim to keep snow from sliding off all at once.

Can you add snow bars when you install new gutters?

Yes. Doing both at once means the gutters are protected from the first winter, and the bars can be placed with the new gutter line in mind.
